General Information
The figures shown are the fire
statistics for a number of years in order that some comparison
can be made.
They
are on a county by county basis even though some counties have
more than one local authority running different brigades.
Dublin Fire Brigade
also
responded to 90,236 calls (74,815
incidents)
for its emergency ambulance service in 1999.
The
fire service whilst operating in 26 counties is in fact controlled
by some 37
local level fire authorities.
Overall
there are some
220 fire stations
in
Ireland (Republic) with over 3,189 serving fire personnel of whom
approx 1,206 are full-time and 1,952 are retained.
In common with most other fire
departments, services etc. the shift system in Ireland varies from
county to county.
A retained shift might be 3 weeks
on with one week off while a full time system is usually a 9 hour
day and 15 hour night with one or two days on and finishing on a
night e.g.1 day 2 nights off 3 days.
This is invariably
a question asked by visiting firefighters so it is included here
if only to confuse.
Statistics For Years
Ending 1988, 1996 - 2003
Note
the totals are the number of incidents while the individual figures
are the numbers
of
turnouts. e,g 3 fire engines to the same fire are 3 turnouts but
one incident.
