The photographs below were taken at the Passing out ceremony for
class 1/2002 of Dublin Fire Brigade. The ceremony was on September
25th 2002.
On the 25th of September 2002 34 new recruit
firefighters gave a 2 hour passing out display in the Dublin Fire
Brigade training centre. The demonstration was kicked of by the
pipe and drums of the DFB coming onto the parade yard and warming
up the crowd with a few tunes. Minutes later led by a colour party
formed from some of the instructors of the recruits the marching
group of 32 men and 2 women came proudly out to show off their
skills to families, friends, colleagues and a large presence of
interested people.
The recruits started off with a marching display where not a step
went wrong.
After a quick change and to the sounds of sirens blaring a procession
of fire engines came flying around the corner. Brakes applied
the firefighters jumped out and various ladders including a turntable
ladder were made down to a high drill tower where smoke and the
cries of casualties emanated. Minutes later after much hose was
made down the fire was out and the casualties rescued.
Next came a road traffic accident where joyriders crashed into
another car. Realism abounded when one person came through the
windscreen of a car with blood (simulated!) to land on the bonnet.
The driver of a bus unable to stop in time added to the mayhem.
Into action as fire appliances and ambulances responded the recruits
now displaying their emergency medical skills and extrication
techniques. Casualties were assessed and stabilized as cars were
cut from around patients and spinal casualties were taken out
from the upstairs of the bus using a ladder slide technique.
Next came the fire with more reckless drivers ( a bunch of clowns
in fact) crashing into a mock up theatre which then burst into
flames. With both the building and car on fire spectators were
treated to a roaring spectacle as people trapped by the flames
were taken down ladders pitched outside. Meanwhile breathing apparatus
crews entered the building with hose while crews outside covered
their exit route.
Showing how much water that can be directed at a fire the firefighters
then carried out a water display. Finally with a 60 metre long
curtain of water behind them the recruits formed up in ranks to
take a well deserved bow and have the winner of the best recruit
announced.
A good day had by all.
