Research Report
September 2005
Human
Behaviour Contributing to Unintentional Residential Fire Deaths
1997-2003
A very interesting report carried out by Dr. Ian Miller for
the New Zealand Fire Service Commission it gives us a better
understanding of the behaviour of people who are involved
in residential fire related fatalities. While a a study done
in Zealand the report researched information from much further
afield including Ireland and makes an interesting read.

This
is more than a book about firefighting. This is a book that
takes the reader into the closed world of fire and rescue
professionals. Today's Irish firefighter is a highly trained,
committed and disciplined individual. From fulltime services
which provide emergency response in our large cities to dedicated
retained personnel in other parts of the country, Ireland
has a firefighting and rescue service to be proud of.
Firecall is filled with stories of men
and women who have chosen a career that often puts them
into contact with some of the most distressing aspects of
society. Daily, they deal with death, danger and tragedy.
They are in the front line in humanity's perpetual battle
against nature's most volatile, deadly and unpredictable
element.
Firecall follows the fire tenders to the
fires, the false alarms, the medical emergencies. It explains
how the service works, what it means to be a firefighter,
how firefighting is passed through the generations and how
tragedy inevitably strikes this close community. Most of
all, it follows the dangers, the heartbreak and the bravery
of the men and women who form the Irish Fire Service.
Ruairi Kavanagh works as an editor, journalist
and media relations consultant. He previously edited Firecall
magazine for four years and this is his first book.

FireCall
|
A
top quality, full-colour publication, FireCall is the platform
from which a wealth of information is introduced, delivered
and responded to, within the Dublin Fire Brigade Sports and
Social Club and further. It is distributed free of charge
to all the members of the DFB as well as to every chief fire
officer around the country. As well as being a powerful communication
tool between the members themselves, and the members of the
external world of firefighting, the quarterly magazine explores
the past, present and future of the Fire Service.
Continually informing its readers of new
firefighting equipment and training methods, both on a national
and international level, FireCall has established invaluable
links with fellow firefighters worldwide, breaking barriers
for the Sports and Social Club, breaking barriers for the
Dublin Fire Brigade, and reaching out to the Fire Service
throughout Ireland and beyond.
